The 19th annual MLA Ride was once again blessed with sunshine. There were approximately 90 motorcycles along with a BCCOM is hoping that with a new president and CEO for the Insurance Corporation of B.C. (yet to be announced) that we will finally get some movement on this. Several MLA’s came up to me after the ride and said that they support it and thought it had already gone through! B.C.’s new Solicitor General and Minister to ICBC John van Dongen read the proclamation then went on the ride which was great! The Minister had done his homework, citing that it was important for automobile drivers to pay more attention and to look twice and that motorcycling was a fuel efficient way to get around. I also found out that Richard Neufeld, MLA, Peace River North and Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources rides and owns three Harley’s that he has restored. Premier Gordon Campbell could not attend but I am told he is looking at buying a bike. All in all I think perhaps we will have all the MLA’s riding in no time. A truly successful day for the motorcyclists of B.C. I have attached a photo of Mr. Lekstrom & Mr. van Dongen presenting me with this years proclamation. Adele TompkinsExecutive DirectorB.C. | In November of 2003 after presenting a proposal to ICBC, the B.C. Coalition of Motorcyclists and Blair Lekstrom, M.L.A. Peace River South were told that transferable plates for motorcyclists were “doable” and would be available in January 2005. After sending out press releases to that effect the Coalition was then informed that with the take over of the B.C. Utility Commission as the new regulator of ICBC the deal was off. The Transferable Plate Program consists of strict rules to which motorcyclists must adhere to be eligible, for further info go to
www.bccom-bc.com.
Over the winter we are going to be pushing very hard to try and make this happen. If you would like to see this program implemented please sign our petition to be presented to the Provincial Government, The Honorable John Les, Solicitor General and Minister of ICBC, and the Insurance Corporation of B.C. The petition will be available at the BCCOM booth at the Vancouver Toy Run on October 7th. If you are unable to attend the Toy Run we will also have the petition available at different events that we are attending coming up, including the Vancouver Motorcycle Show, January 24-27 at the Tradex in Abbotsford. If you are not planning to attend either of these events yet feel that you could get 100 signatures or more in your community. Please let us know and we can sent you the forms. Thank you for your support! ARTICLE ON TRANSFERABLE PLATESS There was an excellent article in the Province today on the transferable plates issue. "No breaks for the motorcycle owner" (The Province, 28 Mar 2008, Page C19) can also be viewed via the link below. Kudos to Corrie Miller for drawing attention to two very important issues facing motorcyclists in this province. >>ARTICLE<< |
